The crater on the volcano island White Island,
approximately 50km before the coast at Whakatane, has blown out ash pillars more than 300m up of the earth
during my visit. It is an overpowering feeling to be able to stand 100m away from such nature forces. But
without authorization or led tour, nobody is allowed onto the island. Ship tours or helicopter flights are
available from Whakatane. |

On the Banks Peninsula, approximately 80km away from Christchurch, the
dreamy Akaroa invites to lingering or as starting point for ship tours to the Hectorīs dolphins. |

Hellīs Gate at Tikitere, not far
from Rotorua, is an approximately 10ha deep geothermal sphere. It offers from hot mud sources over
sulphur ponds, steam geysers up to an appealing hot waterfall (Kakahi Falls) a lot for those of you, who
are not irritated by the badly smelling sulphur smell. |
